Jodhpur

Jodhpur, located on the edge of the Thar Desert, is the second largest city in Rajasthan after Jaipur. It was built in 1459 by the Rajput rathor clan leader. Nicknamed “the Blue City” because most houses in the old town are painted that color. The blue indicated that these houses belonged to members of the Brahman caste. Blue also has the advantage of protecting from heat and repelling mosquitoes. Jodhpur is also called “the city of the sun” because of the exceptional sunshine it enjoys throughout the year. Some small (white-faced, black-faced monkeys) sometimes circulate in the city; these animals can be found in particular in a temple dedicated to Hanuman. It is surrounded by a rampart 10 kilometers long.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is a lost city deep in the desert of Thar. Its imposing citadel, its bastions and ramparts, emerge from the Thardesert. Ideally placed on the route of the caravaneers between India and Central Asia, its past history and growth are linked to the trade that enriched traders and city dwellers. It is from this very prosperous era that date the splendid houses (Haveli) of sandstone, embellished with delicate wood carvings. Inside its walls, a maze of cobbled alleyways leads to the Jain temples and the palace of the former ruler. Completely restored, it is a set of buildings dating from different eras, rich in paintings and mirrors.
