Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur

Mandore, Jodhpur

Mandore was the ancient capital of Marwar until the foundation of Jodhpur in the 12th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, gigantic cenotaphs (chhattri) were built in memory of the Maharajas. They were built on the very site where the funeral pyres of the deceased rulers had taken place. Today adorable little monkeys invade the place, some visitors come to seek a little peace in the sumptuous scenery of cenotaphs built in the style of Hindu temples.
The elegant cenotaphs of Mandore Garden are a place not to be missed during the visit of Jodhpur. Not far from here is the wonderfully decorated Heroes Hall – which commemorates the deities and heroes of Mandore – and the “Three Hundred Million Gods Temple”.
A short hike on the nearby hill will take you to the old fort of Mandore and the big temple inside. The now-defunct fort of Mandore, with its thick walls and imposing size, was built on several floors and was once an architectural masterpiece. A large temple, now in ruins, is an attraction of the fort. The exterior walls of the temple show botanical drawings, birds, animals and finely engraved planets.
