History of Keoladeo National Park

Why is the name Keoladeo? Because there is an ancient temple in the area dedicated to Lord Shiva named Keola Deo.  Originally this land was developed as a hunting ground where Maharajas and British people occasionally enjoy hunting. In 1940s the then Viceroy of India Lord Linlithgow shot over thousands of ducks in a single day with his hunting party. It then turned into a protected wildlife space when it became Bharatpur bird sanctuary in 1976 and later named Keoladeo National Park in 1982. Sometimes, it is also known as Keoladeo “Ghana” National Park which means dense.

Its conservation value was acknowledged in 1985 by being listed under UNESCO World Heritage Site. Interestingly, it was the construction of the Ajan Bund (dam), and the subsequent flooding of this natural depression led to one of the world’s most fascinating and spectacular bird reserves. Spread over in 29 sq. km area, in which 11 sq. km of it is wetlands and 18 km of lush landscapes, Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the richest bird areas in the world today.
